Match Report (Winterton Rangers 4 - Yorkshire Amateur 2) 11th November 2006 NCEL League Cup Round 2

With only Garry Clewett unavailable from Wednesdays win against Borrowash, Pete Daniel shuffled the pack to field the same line up plus Mark Whitehouse. Green went to centre half and Catton to right back.

After such a result on Wednesday there is always a fear of  “after the lord Mayors show”. Fortunately Rangers showed no sign as they attacked from the off. Whitehouse and Haywood linked to cross to the near post where Rob Northen’s flicked header went wide of the far post on 7mins.

Then on 13mins. Danny Clarke held then fed Ross Haywood who was fouled 25 yards out. Clarke then fed Haywood; the full back ran at the box before firing into the far corner from a tight angle. 1-0. Two minutes later Andy Holt forced a good save from Ammers keeper Michael Whaley.

Continued pressure gave Rangers a second goal on 18mins.  It started with a Yorks Ams. Free kick deep in Winterton’s half with a shot straight at Ben Simpson, his quick throw to Whitehouse who raced up field before crossing to the far post where Danny Clarke fired home 2-0.

Andy Holt nearly forced another on 22mins, with a shot across the face that was deflected away for a corner, the dead ball in was headed over by Steve Underwood.

Then, against the run of play Yorks . Ams. Had the ball in the back of the net. A back pass was chased down by Ashley Beck as Simpson prepared to clear up field. Simpson’s kick hit Beck on his arm above his head and looped into the Rangers goal. The referee rightly gave the free kick. 25mins.

Rob Northen, working very hard had a good chance on 29minutes with a run that gave him the opportunity to shoot but his shot was weak and the keeper held on. Two minutes later Yorks . Forced a corner that Rangers stumbled to clear, it just gave a gentle reminder that they couldn’t relax.

They took note, seven minutes later and it was 3-0. A free kick was awarded after Whitehouse was obstructed 30 yards out. Clarke fed Haywood stood on his own on the left flank. He made ground before crossing into the box where Andy Holt headed home. 3-0. 38min.

On the stroke of half time created their best move of the half when an incisive pass looked to have set up a striker who had shook off Haywood’s challenge only for Haywood to recover to take the ball off his foot and the dangers was cleared.

HALF-TIME 3-0

Yorkshire Ams. Stunned Rangers seconds into the second half, catching everyone off guard including me as Wesley Leatherhead rifled home 46mins 3-1

Rangers reacted by racing up the other end. Andy Holt galloped into the box and only needed to square the ball to the waiting Northen but the cross was over hit and it flashed past the stretching Striker. 47mins.

Winterton continued to dominate, Holt ,Ricardo and Northen all had chances slide the wrong side of the woodwork before Holt fed  Danny Clarke who fired home his second and Rangers fourth. 4-1

Rangers replaced Whitehouse, Holt and Northen either side o0f the goal and Yorks . Ams Carl Ward got his marching orders.

The game lost some of its fluency, but Rangers did manage to get the ball in the back of the net on 72mins when Clarke crossed from the left and Dransfield volleyed home only for the assistant ref to flag for offside.

Darren Leech grabbed a consolation in the 83min.

FINAL SCORE 4-2
