Match Report (Winterton Rangers 2 - Yorkshire Amateur 2) 27th November 2004 NCEL Division 1 |
Winterton welcomed Yorkshire Amateur from Leeds, looking to improve on the poor home form. Yorkshire Amateurs sitting one place above Rangers in the league meant for a tough game.
Ranger’s striker Jamie Richards failed a late fitness test, meaning a change round for manager Pete Daniel. Dean Wilson and Vas Nikolaidis became the front pairing and the fit again Paul Lindsey made the bench.
In a lively opening 15mins. Both sides were looking to dominate without really testing either keeper. Spall fired a cross across the face of goal that won a corner. Yorkshire Amateurs fired in a weak free kick straight at Rangers keeper White.
The first real chance on goal on 18mins. Fell to Rangers. A free kick was tossed into the box and looking like the keeper was going to claim until a great leap by Keel beat him to it, unfortunately it went wide.
Yorkshire Amateurs were working hard in midfield - White was stertched with a dipping shot by Robert Dickinson that was destined for the bottom left corner but he did well to turn round the post. 23mins.
To be honest both sides seemed to lack the firepower to break the deadlock, all chances falling to midfielders pushing forward. On 28mins. Chris MacDonald broke into the box on the left, chased all the way by the full back. His attempted cross-deflected goal wards and the keeper Whaley adjusted well to save at his near post.
As the somewhat dour first half drew to a close, Yorkshire Amateurs broke the deadlock. Robert Dickinson ran at the Rangers defence, which crumbled in front of him before he slotted past White in the Rangers goal. 0-1. 44mins.
To Winterton’s credit they had a great chance to equalise, Nikolaidis broke through the middle with only the keeper to beat, but as he rounded the keeper the ball hit his standing foot taking him to the by-line. He took an age to release the ball to Wilson screaming for a pass in the middle, allowing the defence to recover. He finally took a shot from a tight angle that was blocked away and the chance was gone.
HALF TIME 0-1
The opening moments of the second half fire a cross across the face of the Yorkshire Amateurs goal but as in the first half there wasn’t a Rangers shirt there to convert. On 54mins. Yorkshire Amateurs had a great chance to extend their lead when Graeme Bingley was found wide open at the far post, but his shot was blocked away by the legs of Green closing him down quickly. Rangers then introduced Lindsey for his first game for Pete Daniel, replacing MacDonald.
60mins. Rangers were pressing. A throw on the right found Wilson in the box, he turned well and fired across the face only for Yorkshire Amateurs to clear. Rangers picked up the clearance in their own half with Ricardo but when he elected to pass back to White the pass was woefully short, Yorkshire Amateurs Bingley had read his intent and took the ball round the stranded Rangers keeper to make it 0-2.
It was a bitter blow but Rangers responded well, on 67mins. Winterton won a free kick on the left, it was played square to Ricardo who lashed a shot goal wards which the keeper parried before Keel slotted in from a tight angle. Unfortunately the linesman’s flag was raised as Ricardo shot. (He later claimed a Rangers player was interfering with play in an offside position in front of the keeper)
Winterton were now in the ascendancy. Hudson had replaced Nikolaidis up front. Spall had a half chance on 74mins, which went over. A minute later Spall did well down the right, crossing to the far where Wilson did well looping the ball back over the Yorkshire Amateurs keeper for Hudson to convert from close range. 1-2
On 78mins a direct ball up the middle had Wilson battle with Yorkshire Amateurs Jamie Little to reach the ball first. Wilson won, took a touch before unleashing a fierce dipping drive from 25 yards that the keeper had no chance with to draw level. 2-2
Rangers continued to look for a winner. A Keel free kick went just over and Spall fired wide after exchanging passes with Hudson in the box.
Final Score 2-2
Rangers continue to give away soft goals, but credit to the players the way they responded in this and the last home game against Lincoln, where they came back from a two-goal deficit. There is plenty for Pete Daniel to work on but Commitment isn’t one of them.
