Match Report (Winterton Rangers 0 - Yorkshire Amateurs 1) 7th February 2004 NCEL Division 1

Winterton returned to league action after last weeks bad weather put paid to most games in the NCEL, and although the team had a leg stretch in a Friendly against Unibond side North Ferriby on Tuesday evening, the visit of Yorkshire Amateurs who sit two places above Rangers in the league would be a sterner trial.

With strong winds and rain driving towards the Humber, and Amateurs winning the toss, Rangers started the first half against the elements and with the visitors adjusting the better of the two teams, it was one way traffic in the first half.  But tellingly Amateurs created little goalmouth action and Rangers unable to string any sort of move together belied either teams positions in the league’s form table.

The only goal of the game came on 22mins.  Amateurs again pressed the edge of the Winterton box, and when Jamie Ndlovu was drawn into a rash tackle the ref didn't hesitate in awarding the penalty.  Robert Dickenson stepped up and although Herrick guessed right and got a hand to it, the spot kick was converted.

The rest of the half passed without much incident, apart from on the stroke of half time, the Yorkshire Amateurs keeper, Richard Cornwall, injured his calf picking up a over-hit through ball, and after treatment completed the half but didn't come out for the second.

Visiting centre back Mark Greaves took up the keepers duties as the second half commenced, and this change seemed to alter the dynamics of the game.  Rangers looking livelier than in the first half and they started to pressure Amateurs, showing more commitment if not quality.

Rangers first attempt on goal came after the hour mark.  Rhys Pindar chased after a through ball into the box.  Looking up he crossed to the oncoming Phil Doyle at the near post but his shot was weak and straight at the stand-in keeper.

Phil Doyle again went close when he shot from 20yards out, the ball seemed to be dipping under the bar but the keeper tipped it onto the woodwork and retrieved the rebound. Yorkshire Amateurs responded when a speculative shot from 30 yards had Leigh Herrick back peddling and he managed to tip the ball over the bar.

With time ticking away Rangers were throwing everything into the box.  Pindar jumped highest on the edge of the box to flick onto Nikolaidis' run but once again it was straight at the keeper.  Tarbotton then fired a dipping shot from the edge of the box that the keeper pushed wide.
