Match Report (Worsbrough Bridge 0 - Winterton Rangers 2) 6th March 2004 NCEL Division 1 |
Winterton travelled to the South Yorkshire outfit
hoping to extend their unbeaten run to three games after two good results with
their injury-ravaged side. Rangers
had to start their second game without Captain Billy Green, with Tommy Spall
again deputising at centre back and Michael Banks leading the team out.
Just three minutes later and Rangers took the lead.
Richards kept possession well on the left before finding space to cross
to the far post. Vaz Nikolaidis
climbed highest and looped his header over the scrambling Hattersley in the
Worsbrough goal.
The first real scare for Rangers came when Bark got
around Spall but his shot was blocked by the covering Alderson - Goodyear fired
back in and again Rangers cleared.
The defining moment of first half came with four minutes left. Worsbrough carved open the Rangers defence with some neat passing that released Goodyear into the box with only Leigh Herrick to beat. Herrick stood up well before bravely smothering the ball at the midfielder’s feet when he looked odds on to score.

With the home side now kicking down the slope in the
second half it was obvious that they were to continue with their direct style.
Rangers created the first chance of the half when Stones miss-controlled
allowing Richards to send Pindar racing through but the shot was blocked away
for a corner.
Just after the hour mark Rangers went further ahead.
Wheatley, at left back, dropped a long pass to Pindar who made ground
before feeding the overlapping Nikolaidis who stroked home his second.
The home side had nothing to lose and started to
push players forward. As the game
was coming to close they had the ball in the back of the net only to see it
ruled out for offside.
Rangers dominated and fully deserved the result. On another day both Pindar and Nikolaidis would have come away with a hat trick apiece. Although Steve Smith hasn’t been able to field the same side two weeks running the players have responded well when coming in and sometimes playing out of position.
