Match Report (Winterton Rangers 3 - Teversal 1) 20th January 2007 NCEL Division One |
Winterton
returned to action with a home game against third from bottom Teversal after a
fortnight without a game. Pete Daniel made one or two changes to side who lost
at Tadcaster, Leon Sewell made his debut in goal, Mike Bettney replaced Haywood
at left back, Sharpless came in for Cooper in another defensive overhaul. Steve
Underwood came back into midfield after suspension and Steve Ward was preferred
up front to Rob Northen.
The
teams were joined on the pitch by a strong gusting wind that threatened to spoil
the day’s entertainment. Rangers were furious with the first attack saw
Whitehouse race through following his own through ball but the Assistant ref
flagged for offside when he was clean through. It
took 6mins. For the first shot on goal, Holt not getting enough on a shot the
keeper saved comfortably. Two minutes later Andy Catton raced down the right
before crossing to the far post to Whitehouse whose lay back to Underwood was
blocked away as Rangers pushed forward.
Teversal
first questioned the Rangers defence on 11mins. Robert Orton won a header
against Robinson before lifting his shot over Rangers keeper Sewell but wide of
the far post. The play ebbed and flowed, Teversal falling foul of the offside
trap a few times, Rangers Steve Ward felt he was being held back as he chased a
through ball.
The
deadlock was broken on 18mins. Teversal’s Orton held up the ball before laying
back to the left flank, the ball in wasn’t the best but the Winterton defence
stood frozen as Richard Walker fired home from 8 yards. 0-1
Winterton
stepped up the pace, Mark Whitehouse stretching his legs started to push back
the full-back. A cross to the near post saw Holt stab at the ball only to see it
cleared away on 20mins. Six minutes later Whitehouse raced to the near post but
again it was blocked away. On 28mins. Whitehouse made a run from halfway round
two players before being brought down in the box. The referee awarded a penalty,
and Dave Ricardo stepped up but
On
32mins. Rangers had the ball in the back of the net. Bettney overlapping
Whitehouse got to the byline and fired across towards goal, Ricardo raced in to
tap home but the Assistant Ref. again raised her flag. To Winterton’s
detriment.
Rangers
continued to press forward winning a corner, the initial ball in was cleared to
Ricardo whose cross to the far was headed goalwards only for the keeper to again
make a great save tipping the ball past the post on 38mins.
Rangers
finally got the goal their pressure deserved. A corner to the near was flicked
on and as the Teversal defence dallied Centre back Matty Plant fired home. 1-1 on
45mins.
HALF TIME 1-1
Steve
Ward didn’t come out for the second half due to a calf strain as he tries to
build to match fitness, Rob Northen returned up front.
Teversal
nearly caught Rangers on 50mins. With a shot across the face that went well wide
from a good position. A minute later and a shot went well mover as Rangers
settled.
The
chances kept coming, Catton was finding space on the right and he fed the
influential Underwood who’s shot was deflected over from the edge. 61min.
Whitehouse fired over 3 mins later. The Winterton pressure was building
but it was looking like one of those days as good positions were not producing
goals. Whitehouse again made ground down the left firing in a cross that went
over everyone; Catton recovered and won a corner. The ball in was cleared on
66mins.
Whitehouse
fed Northen at the far on 70mins but the keeper, having a storming game was
equal to it. Rob Northen had another chance two minutes later when he raced into
the box and shaped to cross to the oncoming Holt but then fired towards the
keepers top right hand corner only for
Then
Andy Holt turned and shot from ten yards out that looked to given Rangers the
lead but
Teversal
did create an opening on 77mins when a long throw from the left was flicked on
the edge of the box but the shot was wayward from a good position.
A
minute later Winterton finally got the goal their pressure deserved. Mark
Whitehouse having a storming second half was sent through by man of the match
Dave Ricardo and he raced into the box and rifled his shot past Wilson and
Rangers into a 2-1 lead.
Winterton continued to press but didn’t get their third until four minutes from time when Rob Northen made a run into the box from the left only to be clipped from behind as he shaped to shoot, teversal were unhappy as they thought the defender had won the ball but the referee pointed to the spot. Northen stepped up to make it 3-1.
FINAL SCORE 3-1
Rangers go back into second place above Sth. Normanton whose game at Nostell was called off due to a waterlogged pitch
