Match Report (Teversal 0 - Winterton Rangers 4) 21st January 2006 NCEL |
Winterton
made their first visit to Teversal in Nottinghamshire, without Captain Steve
Robinson (ill) Andy Holt inured and Jamie Barnwell who has returned to Hall road
rangers. Dave Ricardo returned to centre midfield with the captain’s arm-band,
Billy Walmsley slotted straight into the centre half bay and Matty Edeson joined
Rob Northen up front.
The
match started enthusiastically with both sides working hard to settle first.
Teversal nearly capitalised on Rangers early hesitancy at the back when
seemingly unable to clear but a shot from the edge went well wide. 4mins.
Rangers went straight down the other end and created three great chances.
Northen flew past the full back before delivering a cross that was headed away
to the right, Catton pulled the ball back 9into Clarke’s path and his low
drive was blocked away, Edeson then fired goal wards from the rebound but again
it was charged down. Clarke picked up the ball and rounded the full back and
crossed into the box where Northen’s header went over. 5mins.
Teversal
were very lively around the park but were well matched in the early tussles. On
15mins. A speculative cross to the right saw Ross Haywood misjudge a header and
as the ball went over him Teversal’s Walker ran goalwards, but as he prepared
to shoot, Haywood made a great recovering tackle. 15mins. Rangers responded by
going up the other end from inside their own box, Whitehouse beat the left back
and found Catton on the penalty spot, but he miscued his shot and the chance had
gone. 16mins.
Rangers
were unhappy with one or two of the challenges by the centre backs, but free
kicks were being given if no cards shown.
On
24mins. Rangers made the breakthrough. When a dead ball was cleared out to the
right where Catton fed Walmsley down the channel, where he was duly fouled.
Whitehouse fired in the free kick that the keeper made a mess of clearing;
Edeson was quickest and fired in from close range. 0-1
Rangers
were in full flow, Catton, Whitehouse and Northen were appearing all over the
place and Terversal were on the retreat. Catton made a great jinxing run up the
middle before being clattered. Edeson’s free kick curled just wide of the far
post with the keeper rooted to the spot. Danny Clarke was a revelation in the
centre of midfield, breaking up the Terversal interplay and driving Rangers
forward.
On
28mins. Whitehouse again did well on the left dropping a cross onto the oncoming
Northen in the box but the young striker’s attempt to direct his header to the
far pot rolled off his shoulder and the keeper collected. Ben Simpson was quick
off his line to collect a cross low down with a Teversal striker closing.32mins.
As
the niggly challenges continued, Catton was cut down by Teversal captain,
Hudson. Both he and centre back Dale Crowder were cautioned. The free kick into
the box was poorly delivered and the ball cleared, Rangers were caught flat at
the back and it became a leg race to the Rangers box. Ben Simpson came to the
edge of his box to clear but the ball skipped up and Simpson handled above his
head outside his box. The ref gave his decision from a long way away and showed
the Young Rangers keeper a straight red card.
Chaos
ensued; Rangers wanted the ref to ask the linesman, to no avail. Billy Walmsley,
eventually donned the keepers gloves And his first touch was to parry the dead
ball away. The ball was fired straight back goalwards and some desperate
defending saw blocked shots and an inability to clear. With the ball on the line
and two defenders tying to clear the ball was bundled in, but as Teversal
celebrated the referee signalled for a foul on Atkinson on the line.
Teversal piled forward, but Rangers nerve held steady, Green dropped into central defence and Catton to full back. Then probably the killer blow. A ball out to the left flank had Matt Edeson chase down the ball with the centre-back, Edeson was too strong and good feet took him inside and into a shooting position. The keeper came out and the big striker hesitated and his shot was parried away to Whitehouse on the edge of the box on the right, his first touch fed the on coming Catton perfectly, Catton cheated down and fired home. 0-2 44mins. It was the fillip ten-man Rangers needed going in at half time.
HALF-TIME
0-2.
Pete
Daniel kept the same 10 on for the second half, with Northen dropping into the
right hand side of midfield. It nearly paid instant dividends when straight from
the kick off Northen raced down the flank before holding for Clarke to link up.
The pair contrived to create a cross that Whitehouse fired goalwards from 8
yards but the Teversal keeper brilliantly pushed wide. 45min.
Teversal
then started to dominate as Rangers struggled to get hold of the ball, any
clearance was coming straight back. Teversal should have got a goal back on
53mins when the Rangers defence hesitated to clear and Richard Walker ballooned
his shot over with only the makeshift keeper to beat. A minute later Teversal
were screaming for a penalty when Haywood battled for a ball with Marples, but
the ref waved it away.
Pete
Daniel then made a double substitution, Edeson was replaced by debutant Marcus
Brameld and the limping Whitehouse by Mark Dale. Brameld filled in at right back
Dale in left midfield, Catton reverted back to right midfield and Northen
returned up front.
Teversal
started going route one, meat and drink to Billy Green. But rangers were now
coming back into the game as Teversal retreated to counter the pace of Northen.
Dave Ricardo was emerging with a real Captains performance with tackle after
tackle and excellently weighted passes that turned the Teversal defence again
and again.
Teversal
were still getting in and around the Rangers box but any chance they created was
wasted with some woeful finishing.
As
the game came into the last ten minutes, rangers rapped it up. Haywood and Dale
contrived to work a throw on the left. Haywood crossed into the box where Northen
and Catton challenged for the ball. It was cleared to Clarke on the edge of the
'D', he dummied right before taking a touch left before curling his shot into
the top left hand corner. 0-3
With
three minutes remaining, a poor Teversal punt up front was cleared by Atkinson.
He fed Andy Catton who ran 30 yards straight at the Teversal defence, as they
backed off he cut inside and fired a great low drive into the corner. 0-4
FINAL
SCORE 0-4.
This
was a battling performance. Teversal created chances but lacked the quality to
convert. Rangers were clinical in front of goal and committed across the park,
and under some strong challenges were still the better side.
