Match Report (Winterton Rangers 0 - Tadcaster Albion 2) 15th September 2004 NCEL Division 1

As the games come thick and fast, Steve Smith was looking for a result after three straight defeats, albeit including two-cup exits against premier opposition. Although performances have generally been good, hard working team efforts we just cannot convert the chances created and have been punished accordingly.

New faces had to be drafted in to cover the long list of suspended/injured. Martin Wood was drafted in to midfield and a new strike pairing of Hudson and Wilson who only debuted last Saturday with Jonathon Ricardo on the bench.

The first half was a pretty dull affair that Tadcaster pretty much dominated. Although Tom Spall had a great shot tipped round the post on 9mins. Tom has picked up his game from early performances and was a driving force up and down the right flank all game.

Rangers went behind on 17mins. The Referee gave a free-kick five yards from the edge of the Winterton box (to Rangers amazement after a great Chris Keel tackle) which when taken was blocked away for a corner. Unfortunately Andy Battersby was allowed a free header inside the six-yard box to head home.

Five minutes later, it could have been two when Battersby ran at the Rangers defence before releasing Andy Cygan but Herrick spread well to save.

Tadcaster went in at half time deserving their lead and probably disappointed they hadn’t extended it further.

SECOND HALF

Rangers were much better in the second half, and started to push back Tadcaster and create more openings.

Four minutes after the restart Rangers won a corner, the ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Nikolaidis half volleyed but saw his effort curl wide. On 50mins. Chris Hudson latched onto a through ball but his early attempt to lob the keeper was off target.

As Steve Smith said later we won a few corners during the game but even with the big boys from defence coming up, Rangers didn’t get a head to a single cross, therefore they become more missed opportunities.

Tadcaster were still creating chances of their own and even had one cleared off the line with Herrick beaten on 79mins.  A minute later Vas Nikolaidis was sent through one-on-one with the keeper, Tom Ryder who did really well to spread well to save, the oncoming Hudson hit the rebound first time only to see that blocked away to Wilson who fired goal bound but the Tadcaster defence had got back quickly to block that and clear what was Rangers best chance of the day.

On 85mins. A free kick on the edge of the box was quickly taken as Tadcaster prepared the wall by Spall, It caught everyone off guard. Unfortunately, the shot curled just the wrong side of the post. It was a good idea by Rangers best player on the day.

Winterton were stunned by a Tadcaster second goal at the end of the game when a through ball to Alan Jackson saw him Race into the box before firing into the far corner. Rangers were incensed as he was that far offside that the Linesman watching the line didn’t see him. The goal stood.

FINAL SCORE 0-2
