Match Report (Tadcaster Albion 2 - Winterton Rangers 0) 6th January 2007 NCEL Division One

Winterton travelled to Tadcaster with two new signings in the squad, Matt Plant who signed from Parkgate this week and Steve Ward returning to Tadcaster soon after signing for Rangers. Only Steve Atkinson and Steve Underwood were unavailable.

On a very heavy pitch Tadcaster started the brightest, quicker to the tackle and hustling a Rangers side that seemed to be hung over. It proved the case on 7mins. When they won a corner, the ball in from the right should have been punched clear by Ben Simpson but he missed the ball gifting a free header to the Tadcaster player to head home. 1-0

Rangers did start to get forward but it was a bit leaden against a Tadcaster centre back pairing winning everything in the air, and with the Rangers back four looking tentative at best it wasn’t the sort of pressure rangers usually exert.

Northen was sent racing through on 11mins. But the ball was too heavy and the keeper collected. Two minutes later Northen had a shot deflected for a corner after a bout of head tennis. Then on 23mins another Rangers corner was flicked goal wards by Northen but it was headed over for another corner, the ball in saw Holt show strength to give Clarke a shooting opportunity but it was straight at the keeper.

Rangers had a great chance on 26mins. Clarke did well under pressure to cross from the left, Northen flicked on to where Catton’s diving header the keeper collected at the second attempt. Seven minutes later Northen cut in and fired a cross in that was just behind the oncoming Holt, another day ….

Tadcster had chances of their own in a scrappy first half including a free header from a cross from the right but leaning back his header went over, on 42mins. Then Rangers best chance of the half saw Andy Catton make a jinxing run past two defenders and into the box but he seemed to take a touch too many and the keeper saved at his feet, when he could have shot earlier. HALF TIME 1-0

Pete Daniel made a double substitution at the start of the second half; Clarke and Catton were replaced by Dransfield and Ward. Ward went up front Holt dropped into midfield and Dransfield went onto the right side of midfield.

It was a strange move but it looked to have paid off as rangers piled forward. Dransfield shot just wide from the edge of the box on 47mins. Two minutes later Matt Plants turn and shot from inside the box from after the corner went wide of the far post. Dransfield had a cross blocked away on 53mins. Northen picked up the ball and fired low into the box but the keeper smothered the ball on the line with no-one challenging.

Then when another Winterton corner was cleared away and a quick break was thwarted by Robinson with a back pass the danger looked gone but the ball ran under Simpson’s attempted clearance and just the wrong side of the post for a corner.

Daniel made another sub replacing Haywood with Sharpless, putting him into midfield and going to a back three. Almost straight away Cooper and Plant were flat footed by a Tadcaster player running at them and through and into the box before slotting past Simpson for another poor goal to concede. 2-0 66min.

Rangers huffed and puffed but only a Dave Ricardo free kick that the keeper tipped over came close. A few crosses could have done with a touch but on today’s performance it wasn’t to be. Too many players below par and making mistakes and some strange substitutions meant the hard working Tadcaster deserved the win. FINAL SCORE 2-0
