Match Report (Tadcaster Albion 2 - Winterton Rangers 1) 5th November 2005 NCEL Div 1

Winterton made the journey to the Famous Brewery at Tadcaster to try to continue their recent run of good form against the third placed North Yorkshire outfit. Rangers again were unable to field the same side as last Saturday. Club captain Steve Robinson, Ben Morley and Gareth Sewell were all missing from the side that beat Lincoln .

Billy Walmsley, Mark Whitehouse and Jamie Barnwell all returned to the side after a three week lay off. The big surprise was the decision to play leading scorer on the right side of midfield with Whitehouse joining Barnwell up front.

Rangers created the first chance inside 30 seconds when Haywood and Northen linked well before crossing into the box where Holt had stole in but he headed wide. Rangers continued to create the best of the first 25minutes, Jamie Barnwell instrumental in most of the chances created. Whitehouse twice got to the byline but his crosses were cleared. Rangers took a deserved lead on 23mins when a ball in from defence bounced before the Taddy Centre half and struck his arm, Dave Ricardo converted the spot kick. 0-1

Two minutes later Barnwell raced into the box but his shot to the far post curled away. Then on the half hour Danny Clarke did well to come away with the ball on the edge of the box before his dipping drive crashed against the bar with the keeper stranded.

Tadcaster were always in the game but Rangers dealt with pretty much all they tried to develop in the first half.

The last five minutes of the half saw Winterton encamped inside the Taddy box. Northen should have done much better on 42 minutes when found free in the box in what looked an offside position but no flag came and the youngster fired straight at the keeper. Then the half closed out with Rangers forcing a succession of corners, one of which had to clear off the line at the near post.

Half Time 0-1

Tadcaster gave notice of their intent a minute after the restart when a rasping shot had to be tipped over by Ben Simpson. And then spent the next ten minutes looking for a way through the Rangers back four. But Rangers can break quickly and on 49 and 50 minutes Rangers should have extended their lead. Barnwell fed Whitehouse who crossed into the path of Clarke appearing from midfield but he shot over. Then When Holt was sent through with only the keeper to beat his low drive looked as though it was going under the keeper then in but the Taddy keeper got a touch and smothered the loose ball. Two minutes later Barnwell had a shot from close tipped round the post.

It was a bitter pill on 60 minutes when Tadcaster equalised. A free kick was awarded 25yards out from the rangers Goal by the inconsistent Referee. The Wall looked somewhat ragged and Tadcaster’s Danny Pitts couldn’t believe his luck and fired straight into the bottom corner of Simpson’s goal. 1-1.

Still Rangers carved out gilt edged chances, when Northen won a corner on 65mins the initial cross was cleared Clarke dropped a ball onto Northen ‘s head inside the six yard box only for him to head wide.

But Winterton were playing more and more on the break as Tadcaster started to get grip on the game as the Rangers returnee’s began to tire and Holt somewhat ineffective on the right. And on 74 minutes Walmsley saw his shot fly over the bar a minute before Tadcaster took the lead. A free kick into the box wasn’t dealt with and the ball was fired home. 2-1

Tadcaster could have extended the lead a couple of times in the closing five minutes as Winterton looked for the equaliser when sent through one on one with Simpson but he stood up well.

Final score. 2-1

Again Winterton has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. They dominated the first half, created the best chances all game but didn’t convert the numerous opportunities. It is frustrating not being able to field the same side in successive games and possibly Holt was wasted out on the right where Whitehouse could have started, but today the best side lost.
