Match Report (Sutton Town 5 - Winterton Rangers 1) 21st February 2004 NCEL Division 1

Rangers made a league visit to Sutton Town buoyed by the excellent win in the cup at Lincoln, but had to make changes to the side with the return of Doyle and Richardson to the heart of the midfield and Sewell pushing up alongside Pindar.

For the first ten minutes Winterton looked very lively, Sewell showing good feet in the box to get to the by-line before crossing.  The ball was half cleared to Doyle who shot across the face where Alderson couldn’t convert from close in.  Herrick spotted Nikolaidis free on the right, and hit him with a 40 yard pass, he found Spall who crossed to Pindar in the box, but he could only head over under pressure.

Two minutes later Sutton were 1-0 up against the run of play when the Rangers midfield opened up and Brown converted.  Rangers basically disappeared from the game as Sutton totally commanded the midfield and pulled the exposed back four all over. Winterton barely put two passes together and only tested the Sutton keeper once more in the half when Sewell created his own opening and shot from 25 yards across the face with the keeper scrambling.

40 minutes and it was 2-0.  Sutton full back Brown started the move from defence with a pass to the lively Elliott and after some unobstructed passing and a fast retreating defence allowed Brown to finish the move from the edge of the box.

Steve Smith changed things around at the start of the second half, Banks from left back into central midfield, Richardson to right back, Ndlovu to left back, Sewell to right side midfield, Nikolaidis up front and Spall to right side midfield.  But now Sutton were playing down the slope with the wind behind them and continued where they left off.  Five minutes in and it was 3-0 when Sutton’s Short headed home unopposed from a corner.

Rangers did managed to pull one back on the hour when Pindar charged down a defensive clearance (clearly with his raised arm) and raced 40 yards before tucking his shot under the keeper.  This was the only bright spot for the visitors – Housley (67) and Varley (90) completed the demolition for Sutton Town.
