Match Report (Winterton Rangers 5 - South Normanton 1) 3rd September 2005 NCEL Div 1

Winterton bounced back from cup disappointment in the week to produce a commanding performance against Nottinghamshire outfit South Normanton.

Daniel made a few changes to the side. Injury to Captain Steve Robinson gave Ross Haywood a start at left back, Billy Walmsley returned to centre back as rangers reverted to a back four, and Danny Clark and Gareth Sewell came into midfield. Andy Holt and Mark Whitehouse moving up front as the injured Rhys Pindar couldn’t play.

Rangers started like a train, attacking the South Normanton box from the off. Looking dangerous down both flanks and testing the keeper with early crosses. But on 5mins, South Normanton gave a warning when Nathan Robinson lobbed the oncoming Ben Simpson but Keel cleared the danger.

A minute later South Normanton took the lead, against the run of play. A good cross from the right had Keeper and defence ball watching and Anthony Bedward happily headed home at the far post. 0-1

Winterton responded well, continuing to ask questions of the South Normanton defence . Holt and Whitehouse movement was causing all sorts of problems. Sewell shot straight at the keeper after Holt had won possession, but the referee had already given a foul on 7mins. Three minutes later a free kick into the box was knocked on by Keel, Whitehouse drove it back into Holt at the near post who got a glancing touch to Walmsley at full stretch sent it goal wards from 6 yards. South Normanton keeper Steve Boot made a great save to push it wide.

Ben Morley on the right side of midfield had a shot charged down on the edge of the box on 11mins.

Then on 16mins the pressure paid off. A free kick into the box fell to Andy Holt who had two close range shots save by Boot before Chris Keel fired home from 6 yards. 1-1

It was a twenty minute spell of domination for Rangers where Danny Clark and Dave Ricardo commanded the middle of the pitch allowing Morley and Sewell to  link well with the front pair.

Rangers took the lead with a textbook goal. Sewell and the overlapping Haywood produced a cross to the far post where Morley ,arriving late headed back to Billy Walmsley  who judged the bounce and fired home from12yards. 2-1

Billy Green was finding energy in the old legs as he worked with the impressive Morley to good effect on the right. Andy Holt was chasing down the defenders across the park, which created a great chance for Sewell as he picked up the pieces from another Holt run, but his rising shot went over on 45mins. A minute later Winterton deservedly took the lead, Danny Clark made a defence splitting pass that Mark Whitehouse coolly tucked away.3-1

South Normanton found no rest as the second half commenced. Andy Holt, impressive performance as a striker raced onto a through ball and shot across the face, winning a corner. The dead-ball to the far post had Walmsley rise highest to head goal wards but the man on the post cleared the danger. 48mins.

On 56mins Andy Holt got the goal his performance deserved. Billy Green's give and go with Danny Clarke had him charging down the right before dropping the ball into the path of Holt. The youngster took his chance superbly with a half volley with the outside of his boot and into the top left corner. 4-1

Winterton eased off somewhat and South Normanton had some possession for the first time in the game, Pete Daniel  used his three subs  as the game drew to a close. But The Rangers defence continued to be solid, and it needed to be  Luke Smithson had to block away a Rico Marrt drive from the edge as South Normanton came more into it. Even into the last ten minutes Winterton doubled up to deny the Visitors a strike on goal.

Then when Andy Holt read a back pass to grab the ball and push the ball under the advancing Boot in the South Normanton goal to give him a brace and Rangers a 5th. 5-1
