Match Report (Winterton Rangers 3 - Staveley MW 1) 12th October 2005 WST Rd 1 |
Injury and work commitments meant Pete Daniel had to reshuffle the pack
for the divisional cup tie. Billy Green and Billy Walmsley returned to defence,
with Haywood starting at left midfield. Centre midfield paired Colley and
Clarke, with Whitehouse starting on the right. Holt and Sewell lead the front.
A steady downpour all game meant for a slick playing surface which both
side adapted to it pretty well. Winterton were first to test the keeper on
11mins. But Holt shot straight at the keeper. Five minutes later it was
1-0 . A speculative cross from the left saw the Staveley keeper Armstrong
come to punch but it fizzed off his gloves for a corner. The ball in to far was
met superbly by Mark Whitehouse whose downward header beat everyone to nestle in
the back of the net.
Both sides were working very hard and Rangers defence which has looked
frail in recent weeks looked solid.
Rangers dominance was rewarded on the half hour when a Staveley defender
slipped and Gareth Sewell pounced firing in a brilliant rising drive that
flashed inside the top corner from
30 yards. 2-0
Staveley were always in the running and grabbed one back on 36mins.
Walmsley was adjudged to have fouled Gary Eades on the edge of the box. The free
kick looped over the wall and hit the foot of the post with Simpson at full
stretch, Eades reacted quickest and fired home. 2-1
Rangers responded well and won a free kick just before half time in the corner. The ball into the box was met by a strong header by Andy Holt into the back of the net. 3-1
HALF TIME 3-1
Ben Simpson was quickly into the action at the start of the second half
when he came off his line to kick clear as Staveley’s Hurrell closed. Rangers Captain
Steve Robinson limped off soon after to be replaced by Andy Martin and a
reshuffle. Haywood back to full back and Sewell into the left midfield.
Holt nearly grabbed another when quick feet created a run on goal but the
keeper was quick to close.
Staveley started to gain a bit of possession, but Rangers adapted and had
plenty of pace to counter attack. Whitehouse back on form linked well with
Sewell but his cross was blocked away with Holt closing. 70mins.
Billy Green was solid at right back, and was quick to clear when a cross
from the right had Simpson stretching. 76mins.
Three minutes later the ball flashed across the face from a corner and
only needed a touch.
Winterton closed out the game with two more good chances, Whitehouse raced down the left and cut inside the box before cutting the ball back towards the oncoming Clarke, but it was cleared away. Then on the stroke of full time Clarke made a angled run towards the edge of the box where his shot lifted over the bar.
FULL
TIME 3-1
This was an excellent performance from a team that worked very hard for
each other and deserved the win.
