Match Report (Winterton Rangers 1 - Retford United 2) 22nd March 2006 WST Semi Final

Winterton entertained Promotion Rivals Retford for the opportunity to play Yorkshire Amateur in the Final. Unfortunately Injury, suspension and cup tied players meant Pete Daniel had to manage without five key players and three other fringe players.

Having said that rangers played really well, dominating the first half hour, forcing a string of corners, but not managing to find the killer touch their dominance deserved. Retford attacked sporadically, but effectively on 28 minutes when a ball pulled back from the byline was tucked into the far corner to break the deadlock. 0-1

The second half mirrored the first, Winterton kept asking questions, Mark Whitehouse having another good game on the left created a number of chances - twice the ball driven low across the face was scrambled away.  Retford also created a few chances but Ben Simpson was equal to it..

On 70 minutes Danny Clarke struck the foot of the post only to be adjudged offside. Whitehouse  continue to pressure the left hand side,

Then with five minutes to go Rangers got a deserved equaliser, when yet another corner was met at the far post by a stooping Rob Northen to head home from a foot. 1-1

Rangers continued to press and approaching injury time a ball pulled back to Marshall on the edge but he blazed over what should have been the winner. Then to compound the miss Retford went down the other end and scrambled the winner when rangers had the chance to clear. It was a bitter blow with no time to respond.
