Match Report (Winterton Rangers 2 - Lincoln Moorlands 2) 17th November 2004 NCEL Division 1

For Pete Daniels first game in charge, he introduced three new players. Keeper Richard White, Central midfielder Dave Ingram and striker Danny Drayton. As can be expected Pete has to give the players the opportunity to give an account of themselves as he looks to build a squad in his image.

On a blustery night both sides battled with the bounce of the ball but rangers looked to break early with a couple of through balls that had the Moorlands keeper scrambling to clear. Jamie Richards fired into the side netting on the 3rd minute with Nikolaidis screaming for a square ball.

It was against the run of play when the experienced Pete Shelley ran at the Rangers box, his shot deflected across to the left where Lund was sharper than Spall and fired goal wards. White parried but Nick Robinson was at hand to fire home from close.0-1 (7mins.)

Lincoln then began to boss possession, edging the midfield and looking mobile up front enjoying the next 15 minutes, forcing a save from White and having a ball cleared of the line.

Rangers forced a great save out of Moorlands Keeper Phillips on 22mins. A quick free kick through to Richards who made ground towards the edge of the box before curling a great cross into the box where Drayton connected with a downward header that Phillips did well to turn round the post.

Rangers were exposing the Lincoln back line that pushed up quickly but were susceptible to being square. A Wilson through ball had Ingram chasing a 50-50 ball with the keeper, which the keeper won.

With Rangers in the ascendancy, Drayton was sent racing into the box from the left, his cross was too far in front of Wilson who recovered well before finding Chris MacDonald driving into the box. Macdonald lifted the ball over the keeper but it hung for what seemed like an age. Richards was first to it but it wouldn’t come down quick enough and he fired over the empty net from 6-yards. 29mins.

Four minutes later Macdonald was allowed to turn and shoot in the box but again Philips was equal to it.

HALF-TIME 0-1

Lincoln started the second half brightly, but Rangers matched them. On 51mins Richards was running at the Lincoln Moorlands defence with Drayton. Drayton cut across the centre half and found space, Richards fed him into the box but Drayton’s low drive was well saved, Richards possibly chose the wrong pass as Drayton’s run had opened up acres of space on the right that Wilson was calling from unmarked.

Lincoln Moorlands made rangers pay on 64mins. With some good work down the left and a cross that Shelley converted from inside the box. 0-2

The score line didn’t reflect the balance of chances; Daniels replaced Nikolaidis with Hudson, and brought Wilson over to the left of midfield.

Wilson then started to do well on the left; his cross into the box to Richards’s feet saw a brave save from Phillips to concede a corner. 71mins. The corner to the near post was met with a glancing header by Drayton, which was cleared off the line at the back post.

Rangers continued to ask questions, Richards was again sent through 1 on 1 with the keeper but fired straight at him on 74mins. Lincoln were always dangerous in this competitive encounter and got into the box a few times without really forcing White to save.

With 10 minutes to go Wilson fired in a superb cross for Hudson who should have done better but the ball came back to Tom Spall 20 yards out. His low drive came through a melee of players and under the diving Phillips. 1-2 Game on.

As with the whole game Lincoln responded well, trying to play out the game attacking the Rangers box.

82mins. A ball into the left side of the box found Drayton he laid it back to Wilson with his back to goal, he turned well, made room for the shot that rattled the angle before coming back into play. Lincoln again pushed up and fired a couple of dangerous crosses across the face of Rangers goal.

On 90 minutes came the deserved equaliser, a through ball had Drayton shoulder to shoulder with Gilbert from the halfway line and into the box, Drayton stood up well and shot across the keeper and into the corner.2-2

Final Score 2-2
