Match Report (Lincoln Moorlands 1 - Winterton Rangers 3) 18th February 2004 Wilkinson Sword Quarter-Final |
Rangers progressed into the semi-finals of the Wilkinson
Sword trophy with a commanding 3-1 win at County rivals Lincoln Moorlands.
Steve Smith made two changes to Saturday’s team with the return of
Simon Singh and Jamie Richards.
Both sides fired across the face of goal within the first
15mins, with Pindar narrowly missing Rangers chance on 7mins.
Although the home side did create 2 or 3 half chances it was Rangers who
closed the half the strongest - Pindar having two successive shot blocked away
from inside the box. Vaz Nikolaidis also fired a rasping volley just wide from the
edge of the box after being well spotted by Michael Banks who has settled really
well in the left back role.
The second half commenced with Rangers still probing for the
opening. Winterton midfield pair of
Ricardo and Singh stepped up a gear and provided excellent support for the front
two. Both were involved on 49mins
when linking with Richards to provide an opening for Rhys Pindar who raced into
the box before being upended by centre half Newman.
Pindar coolly converted the spot kick.
The home side nearly equalised when Spall committed himself
to a tackle - Ryan broke clear
before crossing into the box for Shelley but with the striker preparing to stab
home, Billy Green made a timely tackle to clear the danger.
This was Moorlands best spell of the game, pressing forward to find the equaliser, but Rangers where still looking dangerous on the break and on a couple of occasions broke with numbers but couldn't find the right pass. But they almost increased the lead on 64 minutes - Nikolaidis, impressing on the right side of midfield, closed down the full back and raced 20 yards before curling a superb ball into the box that a stretching Pindar and Richards couldn't connect with.
The home side continued to launch long balls for the Rangers
back four to deal with. When one
such ball looked like a foot race between Herrick and Shelley, Herrick got there
first with a long pass of his own that sent Sewell down the left flank before
delivering a superb cross to the far post that Jamie Richards touched home at
full stretch.
On 80 minutes Rangers sealed the game with the third goal.
Dave Ricardo dispossessed a Lincoln midfielder with a strong tackle,
Singh picked up the pieces and found Richards who held the ball before
swivelling and slotting a pass for Sewell who coolly placed it under the keeper.
The referee found over 10mins injury time and 5mins into that
Moorlands got a consolation goal through centre back Newman.
Hall Road Rangers or Yorkshire
Amateur await in the semi.
