Match Report (Lincoln Moorlands 1 - Winterton Rangers 2) 17th January 2004 NCEL Division 1

Winterton’s away game at local rivals Lincoln Moorlands held a certain edge, as it was against Moorlands that Rangers got hammered 7-1 on the weekend prior to Manager Steve Smith taking up the manager’s role.  Rangers also knew it would be a tough tie as Moorlands were unbeaten at home in the league this season and sitting six places above them in the league. The pitch was quite heavy after two days of rain across Lincolnshire.

A lively start had Rangers looking to turn the Moorlands back four and only the offside flag pulled back Gary Dickinson as he raced clear as early as the second minute.  Moorlands also looked lively using McPhail to good effect down the right as he looked to come inside.

The first big chance fell to Moorlands when Mcphail was allowed to come inside and run at goal before curling a left foot shot that, at full stretch, Leigh Herrick touched onto his right post.  Moorlands again created a good chance when a long throw from the left box was met by Shelley on the half volley but finished well over.

Although the chances were falling to Moorlands, Rangers were working hard and at times their attacking broke down on a poor touch or over-hit pass as they tried to settle.

Rangers steadily got to grips with the game and produced the first goal after 15 minutes.  Michael Banks got possession on the edge of the box and fired at goal, it was blocked back to him and he found Sewell on the left, who ran at the edge of the 18 yard box before firing a shot at goal that Moorlands keeper Thompson could only parry at full stretch into the path of Rhys Pindar who couldn’t miss from 6 yards.

Moorlands were shaken, and Rangers gained more possession and looked good for their lead.

This lead was extended after 21 minutes.  Jamie Ndlovu, who had struggled to get to grips with the game in the first 15mins, was starting to settle when good footwork and a neat pass opened the left flank for Sewell, he drove the ball into the box early and Bakers attempted clearance clipped his head and looped over the stretching Thompson in the Moorlands goal.

Moorlands came back into the game and as the half drew to a close, Bartle hit a speculative shot from 40 yards which clipped a Rangers heal and looped over a back peddling Herrick and fortunately over the bar.

In the second half Moorlands could have reduced the arrears early on.  Mcphail ran at the Rangers defence and released Shelley into the box with only Herrick to beat but his low drive was well saved by the keeper’s legs.

In a spell of heavy rain Rangers sat deeper allowing Moorlands to come onto them, but the spirit and work rate by Winterton was excellent from front to back.

Moorlands best chance of the game so far came when neat possession play gave Shelley the chance to finally beat Herrick with a lifted shot which was heading for an empty goal, but a second Moorlands player headed it into the back of the net from an offside position and it was disallowed.

Both sides continued to battle in this entertaining game to create openings and it was well into injury time when Moorlands finally got one back when Mcphail ran at the heart of the Rangers defence, before releasing Roach to score a consolation.
