Match Report (Winterton Rangers 0 - Hebburn Town 2) 31st August 2005 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay

Rangers made 3 changes to line up from Saturdays game. Jonny leigh started up front instead of Andy Martin, Mark Whitehouse replaced Ross Haywood on the left and Ben Morley replaced Chris Edmond on the left.

The game was lit with a spectacular lightening storm as a backdrop as it traveled across the Humber and Ancholm, visiting West Street after 20mins. When one strike shut down half the floodlights, the players left the pitch for 30mins. as the rain hammered down, before supplies were restored. It was probably the highlight of the game to that point; the only chance fell to Rangers striker Rhys Pindar when he forced the Hebburn keeper Gary Rogers into a double save from close range on 19mins.

After the restart, Rogers again made a great save on 27mins. A Rangers corner was half cleared to Morley, who sent the ball back into the box, the cross took a wicked deflection and the keeper made a good one handed save.

Pindar again had a great opportunity six minutes later when he picked up a half cleared cross, but he flashed his shot into the side netting.

In a hard working first half, Rangers had the better chances and restricted Hebburn to but a few crosses across the face and shots from range.

HALF TIME 0-0

Winteron suffered an early blow, when Pindar went off with a hamstring injury, replaced by Andy Martin. He was quickly put into action when his attempted lob on 49mins had Rogers back peddling on 49mins.

Two minutes later rangers again had a great chance when a ball from the right had Leigh stretching to head, the ball went back out to the right where Martin drove the ball back across the face to Leigh, but he needed too long to set himself and the chance had gone.

On 55 mins another chance went begging. Colley did well to win possession and better to slit the defence with a pass that sent Whitehouse into the box from the left, but with only the keeper to beat he fired into the side netting.

Rangers continued to create the best chances, Hebburn were matching possession but were being restricted to shots from range and crosses without men to get onto the end.

On 59mins Andy martin was sent thru with a brilliant Ricardo pass but his first touch took the ball too far and the Keeper smothered well. Two minutes later Hebburn's best chance of the game fell to Owen Peterson when he cut in and was allowed to run at the box from the left, but his shot went wide from the edge of the box.

70min.Pete Daniel then made a double substitution, Ricardo and Colley were removed from the centre of midfield, to be replaced by Edmond on the right and Walmsley through the middle. It initially gave fresh impetus to the Rangers attack.

On 73min. Jonny Leigh had a good chance from inside the box, but his shot across the face was deflected for a corner, the incoming dead ball to the near post was headed on by Keel but cleared to the edge where Morley fired in a shot that was cleared away. Two minutes later Whitehouse fired a dipping shot just over from 20 yards.

But gaps were now opening up  through the middle of the park and Hebburn made the best of it.  Garry McCartney was sent through and lobbed the advancing Simpson in the rangers net only to see the ball go wide on 81mins. Six minutes later Hebburn took the lead. Holt was beaten in the tackle in midfield, by Owen Peterson who then went past Robinson unopposed before firing low into the net. 0-1

That was game over, but as rangers collapsed, Hebburn right back Danny Hale took his chance well when they found the Rangers left flank wide open, but his strike inside the far post left Ben Simpson no chance. 0-2

Final Score 0-2

It was a bitter pill to swallow; Ben Simpson hadn’t had a shot to save in around 160 minutes of football in this tie. And up to the substitutions Hebburn didn’t look like scoring, but Rangers cannot expect to win games if they continue to miss so many chances in a game.
