Match Report (Hall Road 1 - Winterton Rangers 2) 7th October 2006 FA Vase 1st Round

Winterton made a quick return to Dene Park where Winterton scraped a league win last month in what has been a difficult Local Derby in recent years. This time the desire to progress in the FA Vase was the prize for both Rangers sides.

Pete Daniel gave debuts to Mike Betteny, recently signed from Rossington at left back and Garry Clewett from local league football in Grimsby in at centre back. Mark Whitehouse was also dropped to the bench with Dave Ricardo dropping into central midfield and Danny Clarke picking up the left side of midfield.

Games against Hall Road are never very pretty and this one proved the point. The pitch at Dene Park is pretty poor and restricts any team wanting to play any form of passing or running game. At times this forces teams down the throat of the Hall Road defence which is their strongest position with Jacklin very strong.

Rob Northen nearly grabbed an early opener. Billy Green threaded a ball into the feet of Northen in the box, his first touch was superb and took him into a shooting position where his lifting drive was acrobatically tipped over by Tudor in the Hall road goal, it was a good start.

But the next 15 minutes was a pretty dull affair, Winterton were doing all the pressing but the pitch and Hall Road defence were taking the sting out of the Rangers attack. That was until Rob Northen made a run to the left flank where a neat through ball saw him outstrip the full back and deliver a perfect cross into the box where Andy Holt timed his run perfectly to meet with a header into the far corner. It was deserved. 0-1 21mins.

Hall Road had barely disturbed the grass around Ben Simpson’s penalty area so it came as a surprise on 24 minutes when they won a corner. The ball into the box was headed towards the near post where it was headed off the line, the ball was headed back goal wards where Simpson fumbled the ball and Jacklin tapped home from close in. 1-1 24mins.

Rangers settled back into pressing mode. A free kick on the right was moved quickly to Catton who skipped into the box and fired a cross across the face where it was cleared for a corner. The dead ball into the near post found Ricardo with his back to goal, but his quick turn and shot was kicked away by the keeper on his near post. 33mins.

Hall Road’s only other real chance came when Steve Robinson attempted interception saw the ball kick wildly off the pitch and over his shoulder releasing the striker to race goal wards and play the ball inside to a player on the edge of the box where Steve Underwood made a timely interception and the chance was cleared.

HALF-TIME 1-1

Rangers made a change at the break, Danny Clarke replaced by Mark Whitehouse on the left side of midfield. And then continue to make all the play. Dave Ricardo fired an early shot over as Winterton pressed, Whitehouse making an immediate impression on the right back with some driving forward running allowing Rangers to get behind the Hall Road defence.

On 51mins. Whitehouse cut inside the full back into the box firing goal wards, the ball skipping up was palmed away by the keeper to Northen whose reaction shot went across the face where Hall Roads Walker headed just over his own bar. Four minutes later Whitehouse repeated his run this time firing into the side netting. Dransfield replaced Northen up front.

On 67mins Rangers should have doubled their tally. A corner to the far post was knocked goal wards by Dransfield, the keeper parried low down, Dave Ricardo reacted quickly stretching to get to the ball before the keeper could recover, unfortunately the midfielders snap shot flew up and clipped the bar before going over from 5 yards out.

A minute later Whitehouse crossed into the box, it was half cleared to Ricardo on the edge, he chose to look for a pass when a shot was probably the better option and the chase was cleared. But it was only a respite as Rangers sent super-sub Whitehouse against the full back again, again he got the better of the defender and raced into the box before unleashing a pile driver into the far top corner for a great individual goal from a good individual performance.1-2 69mins

Hall Road had not had a shot on Rangers goal since the first half and Winterton were completely dominant, after taking the lead there looked to be only one outcome. As the game came to a close Underwood drove into the box and shot across the face on 80mins and then a Whitehouse free-kick was inches wide of the angle on 87mins as Pete Daniels men booked a place in the next round.

FINAL SCORE 1-2
