Match Report (Winterton Rangers 4 - Hall Road Rangers 0) 24th January 2004 NCEL Division 1 |
In
Rangers second local Derby in successive weekends, Hall Road Rangers from north
Hull were visiting West Street. With the management team both living in Hull, this game held
a certain edge, as the Jungle Drums beat up and down the Beverley Road and also
as Winterton's visit to their Dene Park ground ended 6 - 0 to Hall Road.
Straight
after the kick off, as people were still entering the ground, Phil Doyle
dispossessed a visiting midfielder and laid the ball out to Nikolaidis on
the right, he made ground before picking out new boy Richards on the edge of the
box. He chested the ball down took
a step and curled the ball past Danny Mudd the Hall Road keeper and into the
back of the net. The game was about
20 seconds old.
Hall
Road were working hard to recover from the early set - back but making little
progress against Billy Green and the back four.
Hall
Road were working hard to recover from the early set-back but making little
progress against Billy Green and the back four. Indeed, it was the home side who nearly increased their lead
- James Richards, who couldn't have had a better debut, latched onto a ball
on the edge of the box but his rising shot lifted just over the bar.
Just
after 30 minutes Winterton were awarded a debatable penalty.
Another cross from the right looked as if it would be cleared by the Hall
Road full back, but as he tried to control the ball with his foot it bounced up
and hit his hand, hovering above his right ear.
Pindar stepped up as the disputes settled down, and converted the spot
kick that squirmed under the unlucky Mudd who had guessed right.
Further chances fell to the home side as the half closed out but they couldn’t increase the lead.
Steve Smith, Rangers'
Manager.
As
the supporters returned from their half time refreshments, Winterton again
caught everyone off guard. As
people wiped pie crumbs off their coats, James Richards was competing for a long
ball with a visiting defender, he won and slotted home his second of the game.
Winterton seemed to step off the
gas a little, and allowed Hall Road to dominate possession but Rangers are made
of sterner stuff these days and Leigh Herrick probably had his quietist game
this season.
With
fifteen minutes remaining Winterton sealed the win. Nikolaidis combined with Spall who created a yard and
released a superb cross to the near post that Pindar headed home.
Steve Smith was very happy with the result and pleased for James Richards on his debut but he felt Hall Road were allowed too much time and space in the second half and felt the performance against Shirebrook on Wednesday was better.
