Match Report (Winterton Rangers 0 - Garforth Town 2) 18th September 2004 NCEL Division 1 |
For some reason Rangers seem to living a “groundhog day” existence as this game replicated the previous two. Winterton miss a glorious chance early on, and then concede a sloppy goal before raising their game creating chances that they miss or are blocked away before conceding a breakaway goal in the dying minutes.
Today Jamie Richards fired a stinging shot towards the top corner before Garforth keeper Brooke tips it wide with a great save on 13mins. Vas Nikolaidis on 26mins breaks into the box to get on the end of a Tom Spall cross before firing over, under pressure.
On 34mins Garforth have the ball in the back of the net. Town seem able to get in between left-back and centre back causing one or two problems before a good run by Robinson before playing in the ball from inside the box where Birmingham taps it in from an offside position.
The half ended goal-less but was very competitive with one or two players playing to the very fringes of the rules.
SECOND HALF
Winterton had a couple of chances early on with both
Nikolaidis and Smith firing in weak shots from good positions. And the customary
soft goal came on 51mins. When Garforth were awarded a free kick 25 yards out
towards the left of the box. Andy Rowing took the free kick and probably
couldn’t believe his luck as the wall parted to allow his shot through and
past the stranded Herrick in the Rangers goal. 0-1
Winterton worked hard to get back into it, Tom Spall again stood out with his work rate down the left although lacked a bit of quality when crossing.
On 61mins. Spall linked well with Richards before bursting into the box, but Keeper Brooke was quick off the line to save well at his feet. A minute later Jamie Richards forced another good save low to keeper s left.
It was a good spell for Rangers but the general atmosphere of the game was niggly with The Winterton players feeling they weren’t getting a fair deal from Referee Ingham. Especially when Garforth were awarded a penalty on 66mins when a ball into the box was lifted up by the Garforth striker a yard away from Billy Green hitting him on the upper arm which was tight to his side, Rangers were incensed and a couple of cards were dispensed. Herrick guessed the right way and saved well to his right. A minute later at the other end Nikolaidis, inside the six-yard box attempting to get onto a knocked on ball was obviously pulled sideways by his shirt, Mr Ingham turned away.
Tom Spall again attacked the box on 75mins but Brooke again saved well.
Winterton's discipline broke down as they desperately attempted to get the equaliser, and continually disagreed with the referee. After another good chance created by Spall, Rangers Leigh Herrick was sent off for Foul and abusive language when disputing another contentious decision. Again Winterton were up in arms, as the referee had only booked a Garforth player in similar circumstances. Paul Lindsey went in goal.
The game was all but over when the Rangers defence opened to allow Garforth sub Vernol Blair to fire home the second. 0-2.
FINAL SCORE 0-2
