Match Report (Winterton Rangers 1 - Goole AFC 1) 28th August 2004 FA CUP EX PRELIM ROUND

Winterton welcomed NCEL Premier side Goole to West St. for what is always a special event, The FA Cup. Rangers made one change to the side that won at Retford last week, the injured Jamie Richards replaced by ex Hull city player Glen Kaveney. Goole where buoyed by the two four goal wins to kick off the season and confident playing a side from a division below.

Just as at Retford, Rangers started like a train. Chris McDonald burst through the middle as early as the second minute but his attempted chip over the keeper went the wrong side of the post. A minute later Rhys Pindar had an even better chance when put through. Showing strength to shrug off the attentions of Walker, he raced into the box, but with only the keeper to beat chose power over placement and the Goole keeper parried well.

Goole looked surprised by the Rangers quick start, and took until the twelfth minute to even disturb Herrick in the Rangers goal when Herrick smothered Whitehead’s low drive. The Keel/Green centre half pairing look as though they have played together for years and most Goole attacking forays broke down there.

Both sides looked to break the deadlock. Goole from a cross from the left had Herrick back peddling as the looped header looked to be falling under the bar on 21mins. Rangers created a right-footed drive to the near post from Nikolaidis, which the keeper smothered with McDonald closing. A minute later Goole had a real chance when Keel slipped allowing Whitehead a strike on goal, but he shot weekly.

The game settled into a battle of supremacy in midfield as they saw out the half.

HALF TIME 0-0

The second half exploded into life on 11mins. Pindar chased down a Kaveney ball into the box. Goole keeper Chris Hill was off his line quickly catching the ball as Pindar challenged with his foot up. Hill, furious with the challenge punched Pindar in the face. After talking to both assistants, Referee McGrath gave Pindar a yellow and Hill a straight red card.

Five minutes later, the deadlock was broken when a lofted cross from Kaveney saw an indecisive Goole defence allow the ball to bounce, Nikolaidis pounced with one touch to round the stand-in keeper before tapping home. 1-0 Rangers.

Ten man Goole stepped up their work rate and missed a glorious chance to pull level on 66mins. A quick break found them two on two before Rangers Chris Keel slipped; the ball was played into the box for Steve Rollinson who with only the keeper to beat shot weakly into Herrick’s arms.

Rangers were still trying to press the one-man advantage and both Spall and McDonald flashed crosses across the face, which only needed a touch on 51mins and 80mins.

On 82mins Goole captain Steve Davey slipped into the box, latching onto a through ball. His chipped shot looked to be looping over Herrick, but a superb save, diving backwoods to tip the ball over the bar was his equal. The resultant corner, lofted into the box saw Herrick come out to punch but through a group of players could only knock it into the path of sub Craig Gorman who drove home. 1-1.

Rangers seemed to run out of steam and never really took advantage of Goole losing their keeper and in the end were being pushed back. Overall Rangers can be happy with their display as they dominated their opponents from the division above but know you have to convert your chances.

The replay is on Tuesday 31 Aug at Goole 7.45 kick off.

FINAL SCORE 1-1.
