Match Report (Winterton Rangers 3 - Dinnington Town 0) 30th December 2006 NCEL Div 1

Winterton needed to get back to winning ways with the visit of 12th placed Dinnington Town .

Pete Daniels made a couple of changes to the side that lost at Parkgate last weekend, Greg Archer was unavailable and Dave Ricardo stepped into central midfield and Mike Bettney was preferred at left back to Craig Sharpless.

The heavy rain that affected most of the country didn’t miss Winterton out but the pitch pretty much withstood the rigors.

Dinnington visited the Rangers box first inside the first two minutes which showed their intent to attack. Rangers won their first corner on six minutes but Dinnington came closest on eight when Big striker Robert Ward held the ball up and fed Lynam who shot the wrong side of the post.

But on 10mins a piece a quality finishing gave Winterton the lead. A long ball towards Rob Northen was flicked on, Andy Holt showed strength  before firing the ball into the far corner. 1-0

Four minutes later Holt looked to be held back as he made ground into the box and approached the ref asking that question. By 16mins Holt was making a real nuisance of himself winning a corner after Catton had sent him on a run down the right, winning a corner for his efforts.

Dinnington wasn’t going to lie down and on 19mins Cooper had to  slash the ball away from inside the box as Rangers looked uncomfortable. And the ball back in was cleared also.

On 21mins a dead ball into the box to the far post was just too high for James Atkinson. Rangers still edged the attacking play, On 23mins. Clarke was brought down centrally, 30 yards out. Whitehouse’ dipping dead ball forced the keeper to tip over for a corner. The corner in flashed across the face and out for a goal kick.

Three minutes later a ball to the industrious Northen was laid back to Holt who under pressure fired just the wrong side of the post from 20yards.

Just past the half hour, Dinnington returned the pressure, a ball into the box was cleared by Atkinson to the byline but a free kick was awarded to the visitors by the assistant. The ball in was headed over the bar. It started a spell for Dinnington, on 37mins a good run into the box and pull back had to be charged down to concede a corner, the dead ball in was headed away by Ricardo.

And on 42 probably should have equalised when a break on the right created a shooting chance but the striker didn’t get it right and Simpson collected.

HALF TIME 1-0

Winterton started the second brightly, although Simpson had to come out to block away on 47mins.

A minute later and Andy Holt showed great strength to force his was into the box and fire past the keeper to make it 2-0 Dinnington were unhappy feeling Holt had handled in the early stages of the move but the goal stood.

On 52mins. Clarke and Ricardo linked  well to give Clarke a shooting chance that went wide.   Dinnington then forced a string of corners that the Winterton defence dealt with comfortably.

On 65mins. Catton made a good run and cross that was just over the oncoming Rob Northen, Holt picked up the loose ball and fed out to Whitehouse who crossed to the far where the ball was just too high for Catton with the goal at his mercy. Two minutes later and Whitehouse fed Holt in the box but as he controlled the ref pulled him up for handling.

The visitors had plenty of possession that belied their position in the league and had a good chance charged down on 79mins. Rangers racing up the other end only to be thwarted.

Then as the rain got heavier Rangers made it safe on 89mins. When a ball into Holt saw Rangers man of the match lay off to sub. Callum Dransfield to wrong foot the keeper to make it 3-0

Rangers moved back into second place as Nostell lost and with Parkgate’s game being postponed two points separates the leading two with a game in hand to rangers.
