Match Report (Winterton Rangers 3 - Daisy Hill 0) 23rd August 2006 FA Cup Extra Preliminary Replay |
Winterton went through to the preliminary
round of the FA Cup after beating Daisy Hill at West Street after a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The first half kicked off in torrential rain and a lightening storm as a back drop. Rangers dominated from the off but a poor challenge by DH Capstick saw James Atkinson limp off, Luke Smithson replacing.
then went ahead on 16mins. when Mark Whitehouse curled a superb free-kick in from the edge of the box. As rangers trotted back to the halfway line lightening struck the area and out went the lights. A 15 minute delay sent the players to the dressing room and the supporters to the bar.
Daisy Hill were a different animal from Saturday, more competitive if a bit light up front.
The second half Rangers lifted their performance and started to look the most likely to score. Whitehouse and Catton becoming more dominant. Rangers doubled their lead on 52mins. A quick break saw Northen run at the
defence from halfway supported by Steve Underwood around the outside, Northen drew the centre back before feeding Underwood into the box where he lifted the ball over the keeper and into the net.
Rangers were denied probably the clearest penalty shout on 60 minutes when an Andy Catton cross into the box was
blatantly handled by a Daisy Hill defender with an outstretched arm. Rangers were pressing hard on the DH box, in this combative game where a few niggling tussles were building up. on 64mins. as Underwood lined up on the near post a
clash with a defender saw the Rangers Midfielder react to what he perceived as a stamp and he was sent off for violent conduct. It lifted DH as they worked hard to reduce the
deficit, but stout defending reduced shots to outside the box which Simpson dealt with.
Rangers were still dangerous going forward, on 72mins. Northen broke clear of the back four only to be brought down from behind by Daisy Hill Kyle Hines which gave Rangers a free kick and Hines a straight red card. DH respond well creating their best chance of the half when a cross from the left was volleyed goalwards only to be blocked away by some desperate defending.
But on 87mins it was all over, A long ball found Northen and Holt on the edge of the box, Northen's good first touch allowed him to release Holt who cut
inside the defender and fire home from the edge. 3-0.
