Match Report (Winterton Rangers 7 - Borrowash Victoria 0) 8th November 2006 NCEL Division One

Winterton fielded the same side that won at Lincoln at the weekend, only the bench was there any changes, Mark Whitehouse returned to the squad after illness and new signing Gavin Cooper from Rossington joined Callum Dransfield.

Straight from the kick off Rangers forced a couple of corners, stating their intentions early on. Dave Ricardo also had a dipping shot fly just over on 8minutes after Andy Catton had fired across the face.

Winterton should have gone one up on 13mins. Danny Clarke broke down a Borrowash attack before feeding Andy Holt who turned and raced goal wards into the box before rounding the keeper but he somehow sliced his shot wide with the goal gaping. The pressure continued with a couple of shots from around the box being blocked away.

At this stage Borrowash were competing and passing the ball pretty well stretching the Rangers midfield. On 15mins a neat passing move created a shooting opportunity from the edge of the box that curled just over the angle of Ben Simpson’s goal.

But on 23mins Danny Clarke appeared on the left on the edge of the box before cutting inside and drilling the ball into the far corner. 1-0 It was a deserved lead. By the half hour Rangers were in the ascendancy creating virtually all the chances. On 33mins a ball in from the industrious Catton to the far post where a Holt stooping header was blocked away for a corner, the pressure was maintained and two more shots were blocked away as rangers pressed.

On 36minutes rangers doubled their lead. Clarke and Holt linked on the left to feed Northen in the box, his shot was blocked away to the edge where Dave Ricardo calmly fired home Rangers second. 2-0. Ricardo, who started the season on the bench has put together a string of performances in central midfield that has forced him into contention, he seems freer in his movement than in early performances and has impressed.

Fair play to Borrowash who came straight back at Rangers with their best spell of the game. On 37 mins. Good work on the right created a ball across the face to the far post where a striker headed wide with Green in close proximity. Two minutes later a free kick on the edge of Rangers box was squandered although Borrowash maintained possession before crossing from the right, Simpson had to show a good pair of hands to diffuse the situation.

HALF-TIME 2-0

Winterton were straight off the blocks for the second half Clarke fed Northen in the box but the ball was taken off his foot as he shaped to shoot. 46mins.

Borrowash then broke down the right, getting behind Haywood before firing goal wards; Simpson made a full stretch save to turn the ball round the post.

Rangers were starting to open up the Borrowash defence, Clarke found Holt in the box but the keeper saved his firm header on 57mins.Two minutes later Holt glanced another wide.

Andy Holt’s perseverance paid off on 61mins. When sent racing through and calmly chipping the keeper to make it 3-0 Borrowash made a double substitution but Rangers were flying now. Gavin Cooper then replaced Clewett at the back.

On 66mins Rob Northen fed Steve Underwood on the edge where his first time shot nestled inside the far post for 4-0 it was mesmerising stuff. Catton broke away a minute later to the by-line before crossing to the far where Rob Northen at full stretch just missed making it five.

On 70mins Rob Northen set off on a mazy run from the right that rounded three players before shooting over. Whitehouse and Dransfield replaced Ricardo and Holt. Whitehouse was straight into the thick of it forcing a save from Borrowash keeper Wilson on 72mins.  Catton then went close a minute later, firing over.

On 81mins and it was five. A corner from the right to the near post saw Rob Northen react quickest to head home 5-0. Two minutes later and Rangers and Mark Whitehouse made it six. A ball into Dransfield was laid back to the midfielder who took one touch before curling the ball into the keeper right top corner. 6-0 83min.

Then Callum Dransfield completed the rout on 90mins when drove home from a central position just inside the box. 7-0

FINAL SCORE

It was the leagues highest score of the season and a sparkling Rangers performance. Even with only a few minutes to go and the game over Rangers were still working hard, closing down hustling the ball when not in possession and had options all over the shop when attacking. Seven goals-seven different players-top performance.
