Match Report (AFC Emley 2 - Winterton Rangers 3) 21st February 2007 NCEL Division One |
Winterton
travelled to an Emley side that held Parkgate to a draw and put three past Sth.
Normanton. Rangers arrived with a full strength side but Andy Holt broke down
during the warm –up giving another start to Steve Ward up front.
Winterton
started brightly looking to go forward. Catton forced a full stretch save inside
2mins. And Northen found himself one-on-one on 6mins but chose to try to round
the keeper who made a save; a shot looked the easier option.
It
was 13mins before Emley disturbed Whittleston’s area with a long free kick
into the box that had to be punched away. And then on 26mins a cross from the
right was headed wide with Green closing. Steve Ward gives Rangers different
options from the Holt/Northen pairing, liking the ball to his feet with his back
to the goal. He used this skill to turn and fire goal wards on 28mins.
Emley
had two quick chances straight after, Green was caught as the ball hit a bobble
as he tried to clear, it gifted possession to a striker who saw his low shot
well saved by Whittleston. 29mins. then a minute later a corner in was headed
against the bar.
Winterton
were dominating and playing most of their football in the Emley half but seemed
to lack the final touch to break the deadlock. In fact it took until the 43min,
Whitehouse and Catton linked to take a quick corner, Catton jinxed into the box before firing towards the near post,
deceiving the keeper who could only parry the ball into the net with Northen
close at hand. 0-1
HALF TIME.
Winterton
came out for the second half and seemed sharper from the off, winning a corner
inside a minute. The ball in was cleared but retrieved and fired back in across
the face where it whipped past Matt Plant at the far where he needed only a
touch but it flew past. On 49mins.Whitehouse from full back found Ward whose
flicked header found Northen who
quickly turned inside his marker and into the box before opening up his body and
calmly firing into the far corner. 0-2 Three
minutes later Ward nearly grabbed a third with a turn and shot that had the
keeper make a full stretched save on 52mins.
On
56mins Rangers dominance gave up a third goal, a cross from the right found
Clarke at the far who headed the ball down into the ground and over the keeper
towards the far post where Rob Northen
made sure heading over the line for his second. 0-3
Winterton
looked to be cruising to another win when on 68mins and Emley going forward were
awarded a penalty. A ball to the edge of the box only needed clearing by
Whitehouse but he completely missed his kick allowing the striker a clean run at
goal where Whittleston, stretching brought him down. The dead ball was converted
1-3
Rangers still looked comfortable and so were doubly shocked when on 75mins. Robinson attempted to pass across his goal only to gift the ball to an Emley player who made no mistake. 2-3 Rangers stepped up again, Ward fed Northen whose flick went just over on 77mins. Dransfield, on for Ward then made a good run on the right firing a low cross across the face where a full stretched Northen just couldn’t get a touch with the goal gaping, 81mins.
Four
minutes later Northen chased a through ball that was a 50-50 run in with the
keeper, he got there first but his attepted lob went wide. Then Clarke did the
same on the left again lobbing wide on 87mins. Then Emley nearly grabbed a last
gasp equaliser when sub Bramald was found in the box but Whittleston stood up
well to block away.
Winterton
were dominant for long spells but sloppy defending gifted Emley a lifeline. But
Rangers got the deserved points in the end.
